Difference Between USB 3.0 And USB 2.0 Port

Difference Between USB 3.0 And USB 2.0 Port

Most computers and high end USB compatible gadgets have been coming with USB 3.0 compatible ports but how much do you know about it? USB 3.0 has been in existence since 2009 but not until 2012 did we see start seeing its implementation. Its implementation can already be seen in devices such as transfer cables, memory card readers, display adapters and a host of others. It offers an increased guaranteed data transfer rate.

1. USB 3.0 gives you a transfer rate of 4.8 Gbps compared to a mere 480 Mbps being afforded on USB 2.0 .

2. Additional physical bus (4 wires) has been added with more space to the existing cable and connector found in USB 2.0.

3. The power management in USB 2.0 has been upped from 500mA to 900mA. This means power stricken devices can now be serially powered as USB 3.0 allows for better power efficiency.
How do I differentiate USB 3.0 from USB 2.0 ?

1. The main difference is that USB 3.0 port is always coloured blue as shown in the picture below.

 usb 2.0 and 3.0 Other factors that you can use to identify are;

2. USB 3.0 port has 9 total pins – 5 in the front and the normal 4 in the back.

3. The symbol: SS stands for “Super Speed” and this also means you have a USB 3.0 port.
